Brixham RFC Updates 14.03.25

Sadly it is another quiet weekend at Astley Park with no 1st XV game and the Crusaders match against Wadebridge has been called off because they can’t raise a team.
However, there are always the last of the Six Nations games which will be showing on the screens in the clubhouse on Saturday.
Next weekend there are some tickets (available behind the bar) left for the pie and mash meal before the Crusaders game against Totnes.

Brixham RFC

Dear Members and Supporters,

After careful consideration and extensive discussions with our players, rugby management, and directors, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw our First Team from this year’s Devon Cup competition. As a result, Saturday’s match against Sidmouth will now be played as a league fixture, allowing Sidmouth to progress to the Devon Cup Final against Barnstaple next weekend.

Traditionally, the Devon Cup Final should take place at the end of the league season. However, due to circumstances beyond our control, this is not the case this year. Despite our repeated requests for an alternative date, these have been declined.

As a club, we are just three games away from achieving something historic—playing at Level 4 national rugby for the first time in Brixham RFC’s 150-year history. As a senior rugby management team, we believe we must do everything possible to stay focused on this goal.

Had we progressed past Sidmouth on 8th March, we would have faced Barnstaple with a depleted squad due to injuries and player unavailability, putting both performance and player welfare at risk. The following weekend, we travel to Royal Wootton Bassett for another must-win fixture. When we played them at home, it was an extremely close contest, and securing an away victory with a bonus point is essential. We then face Launceston at home, where another bonus-point win will be crucial. If we succeed in these three fixtures, we will win the league and secure the promotion that our players, staff, and supporters deserve.

This decision was not taken lightly. As a club, we are immensely proud of our Devon roots and our commitment to the Devon Cup. We fully understand that some may feel disappointed, frustrated, or let down by this outcome, and for that, we sincerely apologise. However, given the circumstances, we firmly believe this is the best course of action.

We welcome open discussion, and any member of our senior rugby or strategy team would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you for your support.

Brixham RFC updates (28.02.25)

Regrettably, the first team from Plympton, Victoria, has withdrawn from the match due to be played at Astley Park tomorrow, and as a result, the Crusaders game for this Saturday has been cancelled. While this is not the outcome we hoped for, we will be granted a home walkover and awarded five league points.
The 1st XV are away to Matson 1st XV with a 2.30 pm kick off, which means the only game now being played at home is the Colts XV vs TeignEX Colts, which has a 1pm kick off.

One to look forward to..

An evening with Martin Johnson
As part of Brixham RFC 150th celebrations, an evening with Martin Johnson was held at The Berry Head Hotel.
More than 180 guests enjoyed a three course dinner and were entertained by rugby legend Martin Johnson, with the evening hosted by former Exeter Chiefs player Chris Bentley.
Proceeds from the evening, which included an auction, raffle and other fundraising games, have raised money towards the club’s 150th Legacy fund. This fund will help develop and deliver benefits to local schools and the community and to enhance the social and match day facilities at the club.
