Brixham Rugby Cubs

Rugby Cubs has been developed to fill a gap in the child development sector by using rugby-specific skills to aid in the development of young children between the ages of 3 and 6. Our vision is to develop grassroots rugby and provide an opportunity for both boys and girls to experience a new sport.

Rugby Cubs is run as part of Brixham Youth RFC Skills and Development School and is covered by RFU insurance

AIM

To develop children’s physical, psychological and social attributes, encouraging a healthy lifestyle as well as gently introducing rugby-specific skills such as running with the ball, finding space, kicking, catching, scoring a try and much more. We offer an energetic and exciting experience with lots of fun and games whilst incorporating rugby-specific skills. Whether your child is interested in rugby or just wants to have fun whilst releasing energy with other boys and girls of a similar age, we are for you!

BENEFITS

Your child will be encouraged to play in teams, teaching important social skills as well as being allowed to play independently, building confidence gently. Using rugby-specific skills, your child will develop strong hand-eye coordination, balance and agility. We will emphasise the importance of a healthy lifestyle, involving healthy eating and drinking as well as exercise. Most important of all, we can guarantee the release of the “feel good hormone” which is released through exercise, contributing to your child feeling happy and content!

SESSIONS

All our sessions are non-contact and focus on the core rugby skills of ball handling and movement. Suitable for both boys and girls to play together and introduce children to rugby the way it is meant to be played – with a smile on their face! All we ask is that you register.

COACHES AND HELPERS

All our coaches and helpers are CRB checked and are also First Aiders. All Lead Coaches are Level 1 RFU qualified, and helpers have a minimum RFU Tag Rugby certificate. We also offer volunteering with the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme and often have up to four helpers supporting their bronze or silver awards.

AGE GROUPS

3–4 years (Nursery/Pre School)

The sessions have been developed to encourage children to use core skills such as balance, agility and coordination. It is also important that children of this age begin to develop social skills, and we promote these by encouraging sharing, taking turns and working together to complete certain activities.

We use multi-coloured foam balls and cones to ensure the children’s safety. The 45-minute parent participation session includes passing, catching, try scoring, cone kicking, and games involving giant rugby balls.

YEAR 1 (Reception/Year 1)

The older age group has been developed to build on the basic motor skills learnt and to start looking at the more specific skills used in rugby. We have specifically designed games and tasks to teach children to find space, pass the rugby ball backwards, score a “well worked” try and much more.

We use midi-sized rugby balls for this class so the children can get used to the weight and feel of a proper ball. This class lasts for 45 minutes, and whilst parents’ involvement is welcome, it is not essential.

QUESTIONS

How do I pay for Brixham Rugby Cubs?

Payment is £15.00 for 6 sessions paid in advance (which equates to £2.50 per session) or £3.00 per week

My child is fairly small for their age. Will they get hurt? and surely rugby for toddlers is dangerous?

There is no physical contact (i.e. tackling) in Brixham Rugby Cubs classes. It is a play session that focuses on key motor skills, including passing, kicking, catching, running, agility, spatial awareness, and balance.

Are the sessions fully insured?

All sessions carry the child’s personal accident and public liability insurance from the English Rugby Football Union (RFU).

Are the coaches trained?

All our coaches have been through in-house training and are RFU certified, DBS checked, and first aid trained

What does the class involve?

The class is a structured play session which involves a warm-up, multiple skills and physical exercise. There is a multitude of educational skills, such as colour recognition, counting, taking turns, but the most important one of all: FUN!

How long does each session last?

For our 3–4-year-olds, the session lasts 45 minutes.

For our 4–6-year-olds, the session lasts 45 minutes.

Do I need to bring anything along?

We advise you to bring refreshments for your child, especially a drink for during and after the session.

What should they wear?

We advise you children wear the clothes and footwear they feel most comfortable and confident in.

Can parents participate?

Parent participation is encouraged for the younger age groups, and parents can participate for the older ones if they wish; however, this is normally not necessary.

How many children do you have in a class?

We base our ratio of Coaches to children on 1 to 6. Each coach will also have a qualified helper. The maximum per session will be 28 children.
